Geropsychology is a field within psychology devoted to the study of aging and the provision of clinical services for older adults. As researchers, geropsychologists expand knowledge of the normal aging process and design and test psychological interventions that address problems that commonly arise as people age. The top psychological or emotional problems that people have nowadays include anxiety disorders, mono-polar depression and bipolar disorder. Dementia is a relatively common disorder in older age groups (there are many kinds of dementia), and schizophrenia (unfortunately) is a relatively common category as well.
Research on interpersonal problem solving suggested that older adults use more effective strategies than younger adults to navigate through social and emotional problems (Blanchard-Fields, ). In the context of work, researchers rarely find that older individuals perform poorer on the job (Park & Gutchess, ).
